I love a good, balanced cup of chai tea. I don’t drink chai as often as some other teas, but when I do I really enjoy it. Its satisfying and warm, and if its really good it’ll curb a sweet tooth.
Maybe thats what fell short with this blend for me. It lacked any hint of sweetness, which may have balanced out the abundance of spice.
Upon opening, you are hit with a strong dose of what smells like cinnamon and pepper. While theres no pepper in this tea, I think the spices are so heavy they seem bitter. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time - how could this tea possibly taste as awfully strong as it smells? I also noticed a green tint on the tea bag, almost iridescent. I shrugged it off and put my kettle on the stove.
I must’ve cringed when I took the first sip, because my fiancee raised an eyebrow and asked “that bad?”. I offered the cup to him, and I’m quite sure his expression mirrored mine. I found it very overpowering, so much so it sort of numbed my tongue a little after every sip - something I’ve never experienced before in a tea.
I had that cup last night. This morning, I was picking out a tea to brew and it dawned on me that I hadn’t put any soymilk in it yesterday, just sugar. I usually try chai without soymilk first, to see if I like it on its own, or if I think it’d benefit from a creamier texture. I suppose I was so put off by the flavor I’d forgotten to try it with milk. I made another cup and added a generous splash of soymilk.
It was better, but the sharp bite was still there, only slightly masked by the soymilk. I also still experienced that odd numbing sensation that lingered even after I had finished breakfast.
If you like your chai strong and intensely spicy, this tea will be right up your alley. I, however, will not be revisiting this tea.
