A slightly smoky base is used for this tea blend, one of the very few Earls Grey I’ve tried that manages to pull off being smoky and bergamot-flavored at the same time. Neither flavor completely overwhelms the other, which is a first in my (possibly limited) experience.
I’ll admit my first reaction to this tea wasn’t overwhelmingly positive, mostly because I prefer mine to be more heavily-weighted on the bergamot side. But as I continued to explore this tea it did start to grow on me. Its much more complex a flavor than I’m used to, with a nice little spicy/peppery finish and a hint of natural sweetness at the end.
I can’t say for sure that this is going to make it into my regular Earl Grey rotation, but I do know I’ll be trying it several more times in the near future. I’ve never had an Earl Grey with such complex and balanced flavors before, and its definitely a welcome change of pace. Earl Grey lovers who want to try something a little more exciting would likely find this to be worth a try.
