I’ve been sampling a lot of chocolate teas lately, with various degrees of success. I’m not what I would call an “expert” in this arena - I’d never touched a chocolate tea until about two weeks ago - but at this stage, after having sampled a half dozen or more different kinds, let’s just say I’m beginning to get a feel for the genre. I’ve realized that a “chocolate tea” is really just a tea with a faint wisp of chocolate flavor in the after taste. It isn’t, and it will never be, anything remotely close to a cup of hot chocolate or a mocha cappucino.
Which is funny, because that seems to be the most common complaint about chocolate teas… “Hey, this tastes just like chocolate flavored water!” Well, I hate to break it to you, but … yeah, that’s about the size of it.
With that bit of wisdom in my cap, I feel I’m now able to say with some certainty that Mighty Leaf’s Chocolate Mint Truffle tea is hands down the best chocolate tea I’ve yet tried. The primary taste here is the mint, not the chocolate, and it pairs very nicely with the cedar-like aroma of the rooibos tea base. The chocolate, as always, kicks in only during the aftertaste, adding a hint of creamy sweetness to the mix and heightening the “cooling” sense you get on your lips from the mint, post-sip.
This, quite simply, is how chocolate teas should be done. The chocolate and the mint are perfectly paired, and though the mint fires off first on the tongue, the chocolate makes a swift comeback in the aftertaste so that in the end, its a near 50/50 mix. The rooibos tea, meanwhile, provides a perfectly subtle base, allowing the flavors to do their thing without crashing the party, the way a bolder, black tea would have done, or adding unnecessary floral aspects the way an herbal tea might have.
The result is a calm, soothing, subtle - and delicious - chocolate mint tea. In my mind, a perfect after-dinner tea.

I was pretty bored by this one, but if you get around to it, try the Mocha Pu-erh truffle tea, which is in the truffle tea sampler. It’s definitely one of the best in the collection.

Hi Jessica -
I can understand that - its a very subtle tea. Usually that’s a turn-off for me, but in this case it seemed to strike just the right chords.
I do have the Mocha Pu-erh waiting in the wings, I can’t wait to try it! I’ve also sampled the Mayan Chocolate Truffle which I have to say was a bit of a disappointment… that review will be going up on the site probably later today or tomorrow.
