The chocolate overlaps but doesn't quite compliment the other flavors... the chilis, alas, were nowhere to be found."

Don’t be misled by the name of this tea. The primary flavors you’ll get from Mayan Chocolate Truffle are neither chocolatey or spicy, but rather fruity. Apples and strawberries are the two primary ingredients in this blend, and while not overpowering in themselves, they do play center stage here. The chocolate flavor kicks in only during the aftertaste, when the tartness of the fruit almost disppears below a creamy, sweet of the cocoa haze. The chilis were undetectable to my palette, unfortunately, as I think if they were a bit more pronounced this would have been a much more interesting and complex tea.
As it stands, this was an unusual and interesting cup of tea, but the fruit and chocolate flavors seemed not so much to compliment each other as to simply overlap. If I had my druthers I’d decrease or remove entirely the apple base, rely more on the herbals and strawberries for flavor, and increase the chilis to give it a bit more of a spicy bite. Anyone attracted to this blend by the promise of “Mayan Chocolate” will be expecting that - at least I know I was.
The complete ingredients are apples, strawberries, safflower, chili, chocolate chips (sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, butterfat, soy lecithin), cacao nibs, and natural flavors. I’d initially tried this tea without sugar, thinking the sweetnes of the chocolate chips might prove sweet enough, but that wasn’t the case. I needed a good half-teaspoon of sugar to help draw out the chocolate notes and soften the tartness of the apple.
