specialteas-tiger-hill-nilg.jpgWhen it comes to tea, India is known mainly for its Assam and Darjeeling varieties. Few are aware that the district of Nilgiri also produces some fine tea. Although aware of the existence of Nilgiri teas, tonight was my first experience with one, a SpecialTeas OP from Tiger Hill Estate.

Being a full-leaf variety, I brewed this tea at my usually safe four minutes for tasting. At this brewing time, the Nilgiri produced reddish-brown liquor and a mild taste with a pleasant fruitiness and no unpleasant woodiness or aftertaste. Being my first experience with tea from this district, the closest comparison I can make would be to a Ceylon, but perhaps with a bit more refinement than some Ceylons that I have tasted. Being somewhat mild in both aroma and flavor, this is a tea that is best appreciated straight up, although one could add milk and/or sugar for a very smooth taste. In fact, that is my best description of this tea...smooth. I can't say that there is anything extraordinary about this tea's flavor profile, but if you are looking for a mellow, pleasant flavor in a tea, this one has it. If this is any indication of the quality of Nilgiri teas, I will look forward to sampling some more!
