Next on my tour of Earl Grays is a bastardization: Earl Green from Stash. Stephen is an Earl Gray aficionado and has already reviewed this tea. I am not as familiar with Earl Grays and have not developed the taste for them that Stephen has.
Earl Green derives its name from the fact that it is a green tea that includes bergamot. It obviously does not mean that the tea tastes similar to a traditional Earl Gray. Unfortunately, it incorporates the worst of both worlds. If you are a fan of Earl Gray, you will be disappointed by the extreme subtleness of the bergamot. If you do not care for Earl Gray, you will wonder what is that strange taste that has invaded my green tea? Bergamot aroma is pleasing, and this tea delivers that. However, there is just enough of it in the taste to keep it from tasting like a true green tea. The oily texture of bergamot is more noticeable than the taste.
Based upon my experience, and Stephen’s review, I would not recommend this tea. It falls short for both the avid Earl Gray fan and those who like a little flavor to their green tea. It will be interesting to see what green tea aficionados think of Earl Green. At a minimum, I think we would all agree that it needs a name change.
