![]() | "A full-bodied black Ceylon tea with a hint of bergamot... certainly not an Earl Grey substitute, but a suitable afternoon tea."

I was perusing my sister’s pantry the other day to see what teas her mother-in-law was keeping in there. She usually has Bigelow, Constant Comment, etc., so I was not expecting to find anything interesting. However, I came across some bags of a tea with an unfamiliar name: Ahmad Tea. I selected the English No. 1 and the English Afternoon to try. The interesting thing about both teas is the inclusion of bergamot.
English Afternoon includes ‘selected Indian and Ceylon teas, lightly flavored with bergamot’. The aroma was full-bodied, much like a rich traditional black tea. There was – at most – only a hint of bergamot. The taste resembled the aroma, although not a rich. This could pass for any number of basic black teas. There is a subtle hint of bergamot, but you really have to want to find it. I would guess that all the bergamot does in this case is to take a little of the bitterness away. English Afternoon is certainly not substitute for Earl Gray, and is not as strong as breakfast teas. It really doesn’t have much of an aftertaste. Lighter than a breakfast tea and less flavor than an Earl Gray, English Afternoon is obviously designed to be a light alternative to breakfast teas. A fitting idea for the afternoon.
