I have seen a plethora of different forms of tea, different kinds of teabags, and all different kinds of ways tea has been marketed. TNT Teas from The Art of Tea are a unique way of brewing herbal teas. What they do is form the tea into discs about the size of a quarter, about 2 or 3 quarters thick. They wrap 20 discs into a stick which resembles a stick of dynamite, giving it its clever name. They are sold for $20 dollars a stick on their website or you can get a bundle of three and save some money.
I placed the disc at the bottom of my 20 oz. teapot and waited for the water to boil. Having tried teas that bloom and unfurl, I was not sure how these discs would come apart during steeping. Even though dry they are very sturdy and do not crumble when handling them at all, it started to come apart almost immediately as I poured the water over it. I left the tea steep and swirl around for 5 minutes and than poured it out. I couldn’t really pick up any distinct scent coming from the tea but the taste was completely the opposite. It is not what I was expecting looking at the ingredients list that includes Worry Free Flower, Saffron Flower, Joy Happy Flower, Goji Berries, and Sweet Osmanthus Flowers. Having previously tried an osmanthus tea I could not really taste much of it in the tea. The most prominent taste was that of the saffron and a general flowery note, somewhat of a “warm steamy biscuit with honey on it” feel.
This product is a bit of a novelty but a much cheaper one than what other teas are offering as the “next generation of tea.” Of course The Art of Tea does not lay that claim, however the product has won first and second place for the best tea in America by the World Tea Expo. A wonderful drink and at just $1 per disk, which will get you a couple cups of tea out of each one, is pretty reasonably priced.
I’m looking forward to trying the other TNT teas they have and I’m going to be keeping a look out to see if they add any new ones. Currently they offer a total of 6 different teas in their TNT form, hopefully there will be more. I would certainly suggest giving these a try solely on the taste of the tea but they are also just a cool item unlike anything else you may have seen in the world of tea.
