"A complimentary and subtle plum essence pairs nicely with these oolong leaves. Not a strongly-flavored tea at all, but naturally sweet. I loved it."

I am a big fan of all kinds of oolong tea. It is very interesting because it is both green tea and black tea in a sense that it is somewhere in the middle of the two in terms of fermentation. Some oolong are more fermented than others, while others are only fermented a little bit more than a traditional green tea. I was really interested to find that there were a couple flavored oolong teas and they all have very compelling flavors added to them.
My very first flavored oolong was this Plum Oolong from Art of tea. They describe it as tea that includes “Succulent organic schizandra berries and sweet amber organic oolong tea leaves blended with the tender essences of plum.” I had no clue what schizandra berries were so I looked it up and it turns out they come from a shrub that is commonly grown in garden. It is native to East Asia and the dried fruit is used medicinally because they possess all five basic flavors in Chinese herbal medicine: salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy), and bitter. They are used as a remedy for coughing, thirst, insomnia, and resisting infections.
The brewed tea itself looks like a pinkish-red clear liquid that permeates the sweetness of the plum flavoring. The taste of the tea is really wonderful, the plum taste is not as strong as say an herbal tea would be but the oolong tea compliments it perfectly. You first get hit with that nice plum taste and than the oolong comes through a the end and carries a wonderful aftertaste all the way to your next sip. I would say there is more of a general sweetness to this tea than a flavoring of plum so if you’re looking for something with a strong plum flavor this may not stand up to your expectations. As a tea I love it, I will be ordering more of this tea for sure and be on the lookout for other flavored oolongs.
