Gen Mai Cha, as I understand it, was originally made by Japanese peasants, to better stretch out their tea supplies. It was, in the past, made with the cheapest grade of Japanese Green Tea, Bancha, and puffed rice. The blend I received from Adagio, was a little different. It seemed to be about half Bancha, or possibly Sencha a somewhat higher grade of tea, and puffed toasted rice, as is traditional. This blend also contained the, very non-traditional, addition of a very small portion of popped corn. About every teaspoon I drew contained at least one bit of Popped corn, so I suppose it was enough, although I doubt it contributes much to the flavor profile.
I purchased this tea with Adagio’s IngenuiTea brewing device. It allows a certain appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of brewing that traditional pots lack. I was amazed at how much the tea leaves expanded while steeping. They showed a level of quality, I had been led to believe, did not exist in the meager teas used as a base for Gen Mai Cha. Although, as graceful as the tea was in the pot, its taste is almost absent on the tongue. While there is a slight vegetal tone, contributed by the green tea, the strongest flavor is a nutty, popcorn like, taste.
To close the eyes, you can almost picture yourself at a theater, sans the butter. I’ve heard of teas that go with certain cuisines, I’ve never heard of a tea that goes with movies. At a few dollars, for a 4oz sample tin, this tea is a steal. I have every intention of purchasing a much larger quantity, on a regular basis. Its perfect for any time of the day, the strong sharp flavor wakes you up in the morning, the rich roasted flavor relaxes you in the evening, and the fun popcorn quality is perfect for lunch.
