I will make this a short review, as Shane has set given an excellent background of this tea and Lea and Stephen have reviewed it as well. I had been informed that you did not need to use very much tea when brewing, so I tried using just a small amount of leaves. I wish I hadn’t because I like a heavy, robust tea and would love to see what a strong-brew cup of Dragon Pearl Oolong would be like.
The leaves brew up nicely, unfolding into long strands similar to shredded spinach. Unfortunately, it had an aroma which reminded me of spinach too. (As you probably guessed, I am not a fan of spinach). I was pleased to discover that there is no spinach in the taste. Dragon Pearl Oolong brews up into a nice yellowish, broth-like color. I have enjoyed the Oolongs that I have tried because of they have the unmistakable taste of tea, but not as strong as traditional black teas and a hint of nuttiness and/or sweetness. Dragon Pearl has less of a nutty flavor than other Oolongs I have tried, and a hint of sweetness that makes it light and pleasing. It also seems to lean more toward being a green tea than other Oolongs. The aftertaste seems like a more subtle version of a basic green tea. A stronger brew may have brought out a better balance.
This is a good Oolong tea that fans of the variety would probably appreciate. However, I do not think it is one that I will rush out to buy or one that I could drink daily.
