specialteas-china-pu-er.jpgI was really eager to try out this tea when I first got it. I haven't gotten the chance to try a Pu-erh tea yet but I have read and heard much about them. Most good Pu-erh is sold in the form of cakes which means you have to spend quite a bit of money on a large quantity of tea you might not even like unless you can get a small sample of it which most places are starting to do.

The China Pu-erh bold leaf is an organic loose leaf tea. SpecialTeas describes it as having a "mild, flowery-earthy flavor." I followed their brewing directions when making it and the cup came out a very dark color. If you wouldn't have known it was tea you would swear that this was coffee by looking at the cup. The smell is very unique, almost leathery, and gives you that "wake-up" feeling like the smell of coffee or some strong black teas do. I took small sips in order to get the most of the flavor concentrating on each gulp. The smell may seem really strong at first but the taste is not nearly as strong. I have to agree with their description, this one is a very earthy tea. It's like drinking from a mossy stream in the woods just after it's rained. It has the smoky bite that you would expect as most of those types of flavors mellow with ageing of the Pu-erh.

I know this is not something a lot of people will like. Loose Pu-erh is not expected to be that great in general but I personally have no other Pu-erh to compare it to. As a tea it's decent but not a flavor most tea drinkers, including myself, enjoy. I'm glad that I got to try it, now I can move on.

I can’t vouch for the quality of that tea, but I’m curious as to how you brewed it: gongfu style or western?

I actually tried it both ways. Of course I had to brew puerh the traditional and “correct” way gongfu style. I also tried the western style of brewing just to see how it would turn out. Both ways pretty much gave me the same flavor though, a very leathery earthy like taste.
