This was my first Mate tea, and I knew nothing about them going in. All I had to go by was Stephen’s review and the description on SpecialTeas website:
If you like the dessert, you must try this blend. Toasted Mate with cocoa, white chocolate chips, crocant bits, fine Madagascar vanilla and our secret tiramisu flavor. An invigorating, caffeine-bearing herbal infusion.
The aroma of the brewed tea is reminiscent of coffee. I have noticed this about other teas, but it was much stronger with Mate Tiramisu. This is evidently due to the roasted Mate. This aroma overpowers all the others and only a hint of nut and cocoa is detectable.
The flavor is very reminiscent of coffee and it strains the English language to describe it as Tiramisu. To be fair, it would probably be hard to make a tea that really tasted like Tiramisu. However, that begs the question; Why name it as such? There is sweetness in the taste, but you really have to hunt for it. The aftertaste is nutty and slightly bitter. It is not a tea I will drink again and don’t think I would recommend it to anyone. I do think that some people would like it, but those people will be searching for a tea like this. With the possible exception of someone switching from coffee, I do not think this would be a good choice for a new tea drinker.
