Its OK"A light tea with floral hints... but there's less body and flavor here than in other Milima's I've tried."

teazone-kenya-milima.jpgTea is a very important product for Kenya. The industry provides employment for several hundred thousand people, from the small holders to the steamship companies that transport the tea around the globe. Tea is a relative newcomer to the Kenyan agricultural scene. British planters started tea during the early to mid 1900’s. Many of these planters were feeling unwanted in India (India achieved independence in 1947) and migrated to Kenya. Despite a ban on the transfer of plants and information, these planters smuggled Indian tea plants into Kenya. The plants thrived in the Kenyan climate and today Kenya is the world’s second largest exporter of tea.

Almost all the tea produced in Kenya is destined for teabags right from the start. In fact, there is only one factory producing orthodox leaf and that is Saosa built in 1929 in the Kericho estates region to the West of the Rift Valley.

I have had a few different Kenya Milima Estate teas from different places and must say that I truly enjoy them. They are very similar or Darjeeling and Assam teas and have really wonderful flavor. This one from Tea zone does not seem to have as many golden tips as I have seen in others. The color of the brewed tea is a nice golden brown with that wonderful smell that is just divine. I found this one quite a bit more astringent with less actual flavor than others I have tried. It is also light… where most Milima Estate tea should have a nice body to it. There are also some slight floral hints in the background but nothing that stands out.

Overall this is a decent cup of tea although as far as the single estate goes I have had better. This would be great as an everyday tea, however if you enjoy this and want a fuller taste I would try looking for the same estate from a few different places and see what you like the best. Single Estate teas are very interesting and I would suggest trying out a few others as well.
