My wife is a particular fan of Jelly Belly jellybeans, and her absolute favorite flavor is “Juicy Pear.” Opening this bag, it is exactly that same aroma that hits you right in the nose - the sweet, thick perfume of juicy pears.
The flavor of the final brew is similar, though thankfully more muted than the aroma of the raw leaves. There’s quite a bit going on in this blend, which is a mix of “essence of pear” with organic sencha, pan fried greens (like hojicha, I’m assuming), marigolds and apple bits. The primary flavor through is still the juicy pear, though, and for me it was spot on. The flavor is a bit more pronounced and concentrated than what you’d expect in an actual pear, so I’m not sure if there’s some artificial flavoring going on here or not. But whatever it is, it works for me - this was the first pear-flavored tea I’ve had that I can say was just spot-on, exactly what I was hoping it would be.
The fruit flavors here are the primary movers-and-shakers, so I can’t provide much insight as to the quality of the sencha and “pan-fried greens.” Regardless, the mixture as a whole was a big success for me, and one of the first teas I’ve sampled from Art of Tea that I already have put down in my “must buy again” column. Definitely a keeper.
