The Tea Table website describes Belgian Chocolate Rooibos in the following: “Rooibos just got even better with the addition of cocoa bean pieces and calendula petals. Velvety smooth with a nice, rich chocolate flavor.” From reading the description, I was already looking forward to trying this tea. The aroma was deceptively light and I wasn’t sure the caffeine free chocolate treat I was anticipating was going to come to fruition. Thankfully, the taste of this tea is much more defined than the aroma. The first taste that I noticed was of the Rooibos itself, which was quite pleasant. The taste of Rooibos itself is difficult for me to explain. It is a very smooth, mellow taste that tends to blend very well with many different flavor options. This was followed by a delicate sweetness that I noticed mostly on my lips. Both of these were finshed with a decadent chocolate flavor that lingered even after I had swallowed.
Rooibos is made from a South African caffeine-free bush. Like black tea, it is oxidized and some consider it an alternative to decaffeinated black tea. In my opinion Rooibos is much more mellow than even decaffeinated black teas and the taste meshes deliciously with spices, fruits and nuts, as well as chocolate. Rooibos teas are quickly becoming some of my favorites. I have read that one of the benefits of Rooibos is that it can lessen the effect of headaches. As a frequent headache sufferer for many years, I have recently added a relaxing cup of Rooibos before bed to my daily tea drinking schedule. I will definitely be ordering more of this Belgian Chocolate Rooibos to add to my Rooibos collection. It is an amazing sweet treat that I can see as a healthier alternative to those chocolate cravings!
