Before I give my opinion on this tea, I should say that I tend to stay away from spicy foods and drinks. Cinnamon and chai teas are about as spicy as I like to go. I decided to try this tea because of the “sweet” in the name as well as the fact that most of the ingredients are not spicy in my book. These include organic licorice root, organic cocoa shells, orange peel, organic ginger root, organic fennel seed, organic anise seed, organic cinnamon bark, natural tangerine flavor, natural orange flavor, organic cardamom seed, and organic clove bud. However, the last two ingredients, organic cayenne and organic black pepper, completely overpower all of the other ingredients . I even went a little light on the brew time just to make sure that I wouldn’t over do it.
With that being said, I found this tea practically unbearable. The smell of the spices hit me as soon as I opened the tea bag. The tea had a really nice golden honey color to it so I thought that I was in for a treat. At first it seemed like a typical sweet herbal tea. That is until the burning after taste hit me like a brick wall. My sinuses and throat felt as though they were on fire. For someone who has asthma and allergies, that was not a good feeling. I forfeited this cup to my boyfriend, since has a more adventurous palate. It was burning my eyes just sitting next to it. He felt the same way I did about the overly spicy aftertaste. For those who enjoy spicy foods, this tea may be perfect but it just wasn’t for me.
