You have to suspicious of citrus green teas. Both of those words can vary dramatically. When you combine the two, the variety increases exponentially. There are many green teas with various citrus additives, and many of them disappoint. So I was cautious as I began to brew Citron Green from Adagio. This is a company that has an excellent reputation and produces some amazing teas, including my current favorite green tea – Casablanca Twist.
The tea leaves have a nice smell to them; a good rich green tea aroma with hints of citrus. As it brewed, the leaves unfolded beautifully, giving the impression of good quality leaves cut to just the right size. The aroma of the brewed tea was pleasant but mild. The tea has a light green, transparent color that makes the tea look like it will be quite weak. Obviously, you don’t expect green teas to have the dark, rich color of black teas, but I was concerned this one would be too weak. The taste is certainly mild, but not as weak as its appearance suggests. The citrus is only slightly noticeable, adding a pleasant accent to the mild green tea taste. There is a clean aftertaste that disappears quickly.
Adagio’s Citron Green is a good every-day green tea and would be a good choice for those wanting to try green tea for the first time. However, it misses the mark for me. I would certainly enjoy this tea if offered a cup at a friends house or restaurant, but I won’t be placing an order myself.
