china-mist-passion.jpgI have never been that much of a fan of fruit flavored Ice teas, with the exception of some of the raspberry teas I’ve had in restaurants. This is probably because I am use to drinking my flavored teas hot, so the iced ones remind me of when my hot teas have cooled too much. Like Stephen, I have not had much success at finding a tea that I like as much as restaurant teas. There is one exception and I guess I will review it here at some point.

When I requested my first batch of teas for review, I decided to choose a variety of tea types. This would give me a good overview of the teas available and explore my tastes. For my iced tea, I chose China Mist’s Passion fruit tea. They claim that this is one of their most popular teas and describe it as ‘full-bodied’. This is an apt description. As anyone who reads my reviews would expect, I brewed the tea strongly, hoping for a ‘leafy’ taste. Unfortunately, this was not the result. I generally drink my tea without milk, sugar, lemon, or pretense. The unsweetened tea is bold, but tastes like many other iced teas. The passion fruit is very faint, not enough to ‘sweeten’ the tea. It will be a big disappointment to those who are excited about passion fruit in their tea.

Iced Tea should be swimming in sugar, right? But the addition of fruit flavor should negate this need. However, I decided to try this iced tea the American way – sugared. (although not the Southern way – I didn’t have that much sugar in the house). My hope was that the sugar would bring out the fruit taste. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The passion fruit still seemed almost non-existent. It tasted better, but sugar naturally does that on its own.

This is not a bad iced tea. For those who like plain tea with just a hint of fruit taste, China Mist’s Passion Fruit Iced Tea will make a nice addition to your portfolio. If you are trying to convince someone to drink more tea, this is not the one to use.

Have you tried Tazo Passion Iced Tea? It is very fruity. It has a wonderful tartness and natural sweetness as well. I love to add just a touch of vanilla to add a little extra sweetness and some extra complexity!

No, I have not had the opportunity to try that one. I have been mostly pleased with Tazo’s products and I will give that one a try sometime. Thanks for the feedback.
