Silver needle is a very famous and sought after tea because of its rarity and high quality. The leaves of this one from Teazone are magnificent looking, all white with just a tinge of green in them. They also look what I can only describe as fluffy. The brewed tea comes out to a very clear liquid with only the slightest bit of greenish-yellow color to be noticed.
Following the suggestion from their website I brewed this tea 3 times, and I must say I was not impressed with any of the infusions. White tea is obviously more subtle and delicate, but even these qualities were not there. The tea had a little bit of a floral hint to the smell and taste but beyond that there was not much else. Even after the 2nd and 3rd infusion the flavor did not seem to come through very well.
What I did find that worked better was instead of multiple infusions, brew this tea once for a longer period of time (10 minutes or longer) and you will get more of a full flavor instead of stretching it over multiple cups. However, even doing this I don’t think you will get the complete picture of what a good silver needle should be.
It could just be perhaps that my palette is not trained enough for these types of teas, but in comparison to tea this is just scarcely flavored water. On the flip side there are the great health benefits from white tea, but in this case it’s a trade-off with flavor. Definitely something you want to order a sample of first.
