necessiteas-pomegranate-ool.jpgThe pomegranate is a very interesting fruit and anyone who has had a fresh one will probably tell you the same thing. At first glance it looks something like a grapefruit, but red just like an apple. This is of course until you cut one open and see just what’s inside. The “fruit” of the pomegranate is actually a berry and the parts you eat are all the little seed sacks in the fruit called arils. Pomegranate has a limited availability because it’s a seasonal fruit but nowadays you can see all sorts of drinks and juices with pomegranate juice in them.

Pomegranate has a taste that is in between sweet and tangy, kind of like cranberry only much less tart and fruitier. The smell opening the bag is magnificent, and you know that it’s absolutely pomegranate in there. The taste is much less powerful than the aroma of the leaf but still there. This is a tea where you’ll want to sip and wait, because that pomegranate flavor takes a while to develop in the mouth but carries quite long on the taste buds, which is an absolute treat. As for the oolong I really did not get much of that, so I opted for a second infusion just as Stephen said he had done in his review of this tea. The pomegranate flavor of the second cup was much mellower, yet up front more than the first cup and came right at you rather than taking time to develop. Still, I really didn’t get much of an oolong flavor. You might be let down buying it as an oolong (even if it is a Ti Kuan Yin), but the pomegranate will make up for that. This tea is however kind of expensive for a flavored oolong and that would be a key factor in how often I would drink it.
