Thumbs up!"With a bit of sweetener and milk this tea really shines... I would recommend it."

goodearth-chai.jpgI received this tea free strait from the factory. My job, although completely un-tea-related, takes me to alot of strange places. Places that I would otherwise never think to go to. A few weeks ago it took me to the offices of Good Earth Teas in sunny Santa Cruz California. Ok, so it wasn’t exactly sunny, more pleasantly overcast really. I was chatting with one of the employees while I worked, and let my tea obsession slip, tactically.

“What kind of Tea do you like?”

“Well I’ve always been a big fan of Masala Chai.”

The guy disappeared, leaving me to my work. Just as I was finishing up I received a visitor bearing, much appreciated, gifts. Two boxes of Good Earths Finest. One box of Chai Tea, and one box of Super Green Tea, both freebies from the factory floor.

As Chai is usually prepared with milk, I’ve decided to try it both with, and without, warm milk added. My first cup, sans milk, was a little mild, but expected to be. Most Chai blends are made with the expectation that your going to blend the final product with lots of milk and sugar, as such most Chai blends are a little lackluster on their own. I could definitely make out the familiar flavors of traditional Indian tea, namely ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Still I wouldn’t bother with this tea as a solo act, you’ll be rather disappointed.

What does not disappoint is how well this tea performs its intended function. When properly sweetened the spices in this tea really come alive. They pop on the tongue, and bring back feelings of nostalgia for my days guzzling cup after cup of Masala Chai, in my wanderings around the coffee houses of San Francisco. There is a depth to the black tea flavor provided by the addition of milk that was lacking in the solo cup. I would heartily recommend this tea to those who love British and Indian style milk-tea’s, and give it a firm thumbs down for anyone who prefers to drink their tea without additions.
