Necessiteas is an interesting company, and I have enjoyed the couple of teas I’ve tried. Candy-esque teas seems to be a common theme. A caramel flavored Oolong was just too much for me to pass on. I’ve only tried a few Oolongs, but have enjoyed their natural earthy flavor. However, I have been enjoying flavored black teas and wanted to see how a flavored Oolong compared. Necessiteas Caramel Oolong leaped out at me because of my love for both tea and caramel. When I opened the pouch, I was greeted by a wonderful caramel aroma, combined with the nutty, earthy smell of a typical Oolong. I was getting very excited about trying this blend. I am trying to drink more Oolong and green teas instead of black, and this one could become one of my regulars.
From Necessities website;
Specially selected Formosa Oolong teas, flavored naturally with Caramel pieces and Marigold flowers to bring out the sweet aroma of the Oolong tea. Caramel Oolong has an aroma and a taste like no other tea. A wonderful dessert tea!
I like to enjoy the aroma of my tea before drinking – which is odd since I have never developed this habit when it comes to wine – and this one has a wonderful one. The strong smell of caramel is still present and the hint of marigold is detectable if you look for it. The taste met all my expectations. The caramel compliments the Formosa Oolong very nicely. It is the perfect accent to the natural nutty, earthy flavor that is usually found with Oolongs. There is a softer aftertaste than usually found with Oolongs, but a slightly astringent taste lasts on the center of the tongue.
At Teaviews.com, we have been discussing whether or not to ‘double-dip’ – or infuse the same leaves more than once – and the general consensus seems to be that the less oxidized the tea is, the better suited for multiple infusions. So, I decided to start with this Oolong and see how it did. The second infusion was as good as the first with almost no loss in strength or taste. I really like this tea and would strongly recommend it as a staple in anyone’s pantry. I am developing a taste for flavored teas, especially the chocolate, mint, caramel ones. Necessitea’s Caramel Oolong is a wonderful desert tea that is also a nice pick-me-up on a cold, wet afternoon.
