Review: Teavana Mandarin Orange Green Tea
Marigold Tea, Orange Blossom Tea, Orange Peel Tea, Safflower Tea, Sencha Tea, Teavana Add comments"A good mixture of bitter/vegetal sencha with tangy/sweet orange peel and flowers... not the freshest sencha I've had, but it works."

This loose leaf tea from Teavana features a Japanese sencha paired with “orange peels, orange blossoms, marigold and safflower petals”. This combination works well, the vegetal-tasting sencha with a clean and slightly bitter taste being balanced by tangy/sweet (but not sugary) orange peels and flowers. The sencha used here is not the freshest-tasting I’ve had, but it is pretty good for a Japanese tea available at a walk-in establishment (we have a local Teavana where I live). Unlike Chinese greens, which are typically pan roasted, Japanese greens are steamed, resulting in a less-complex flavor and one better-suited to added fruit flavoring. This combination is not unique; Den’s Tea offers an “Orange Sencha” which is very similar, although the sencha that Den’s uses is delivered to your door a bit fresher, resulting in tea that is a bit fuller in flavor than this one. Still, especially for a readily-available flavored green tea, this is a good choice, especially for a Japanese sencha. I have found myself drinking it on a regular basis and enjoying it! Incidentally, Teavana offers a Japanese Wild Cherry, which uses the same sencha blended with “candied cherry pieces and rose petals”. While a bit sweeter tasting (and of course a different flavoring) than the Mandarin Orange, this one is also a good choice and makes for an interesting change of pace, though not up to the standards of Den’s cherry sencha (see my previous review).
