Simply put, Rishi Tea’s Ancient Emerald Lily Green Tea is superb. Rishi Tea’s website describes this tea as ” A unique green tea that is hand-harvested especially for Rishi Tea from Yunnan’s old growth forest tea trees”. Being a green tea, this tea shares essentially no characteristics with the Yunnan black teas that I have had in the past. This tea offers a completely refreshing and original mixture of flavors, and is unlike any other green tea I have had before. The dried leaves have a faint aroma that could best be described as clean and floral. I steeped the leaves for about 5 minutes in 180 degree water to produce a light yellowish-green liquid, nothing unusual for green tea. The leaves opened up to a pretty decent size, but again, nothing out of the ordinary. The hallmark of this tea is, of course, its taste. It starts out with just a hint of floral notes, but finishes with a very strong toasted nuttiness. Rishi tea describes it as “toasted pine nut”, but I actually find it more comparable to the nutty flavor found in soy beans or roasted soy nuts. This tea has a wonderful texture, which could almost be described as creamy; there was not a trace of wateriness to this tea. I would love to have this tea in continuous supply in my cabinet. However, at $9 for 1 ounce and $30 for 4 ounces, this tea, unfortunately, will be one that I would only be able to buy in very small amounts and save for special occasions. Ancient Emerald Lily Green Tea may be a bit too expensive for the average tea drinker. But given how truly exceptional this tea is, combined with the fact that is organic and fair-trade tea, it just may be well worth the splurge. I highly recommend this tea, with no reservations.
