Adagio, Green Tea Add comments

Thumbs up!"Might be too weak for those who love green teas with a strong vegetal taste, but otherwise a good, safe, "entry tea" for those new to high-quality green tea."

adagio-green-anjii.jpgThe first time I ordered tea online, it was from Adagio. I found their site extremely convenient and was impressed with the wide selection of teas. When selecting my first samples, I came across this tea. It stood out immediately because my sister’s name is Anji – not Angie, Angela, etc. – and it is the only time I’ve seen the name spelled this way. So, I figured it must be a sign. Adagio describes the tea thusly;

Green tea from the Zhejiang region of China. The name translates to ’safety and prosperity,’ a gentle reminder of green tea’s health benefits. Its thin, wavy leaves appear almost black when dry. Once infused, however, our ‘Green Anji’ shows its true colors, producing a light cup with a smooth, mellow taste and a gentle, soothing aroma.

I am not a huge fan of green teas – especially traditional Chinese varieties – but I am trying to acquire a taste for them. Besides, these reviews are not just about whether I like the tea, but whether other will also. The leaves do not have a particularly strong aroma, which surprised me. My limited experience has been for green teas – at least the few Chinese and Japanese varieties I have tried – to have more of a green, leafy smell. However, Green Anji had a more subdued, but clearly green tea, aroma. After brewing for three minutes – per Adagio’s recommendation – the aroma of the leaves really opened up and had the strong ‘green vegetable’ smell often found with these green teas. The aroma of the brewed cup also had this smell to it, but not to the degree of the now discarded leaves. The tea brewed up a pale green color, giving the impression that the taste would be weaker than other green teas, but the aroma indicated otherwise.

“Safety and prosperity” is a good description of this tea. It is a nice quality green tea, with the distinctive vegetal taste that so many green tea lovers appreciate. However, it is not a strong or overwhelming as some of the others I have tried. Green Anji might be too weak for those who love green teas with a strong vegetal taste, but for someone who wants to experiment with this type of green tea, Green Anji is a good – safe – start.
