Thumbs up!"A rich, bergamot aroma infuses this blend, which brews up surprisingly smooth, with almost no bitterness at all."

mightyleaf-organic-earl-gre.jpgI am not a big fan of Earl Gray, but I am a huge fan of Mighty Leaf. Don’t misunderstand me, I like some Earl Grays, but I just haven’t come to fully appreciate bergamot as much as some people. The Mighty Leaf variety pack I purchased included this Organic Earl Gray, and it seemed like time to give it a try and see how it stands up to the other Earl Grays I’ve tried.

The leaves have a classic Earl Gray aroma. The bergamot is dominant, but not overwhelming. I love the Mighty Leaf teabags. They are very nicely made and tell you the brew time right on the tab. Mighty Leaf recommends 4 minutes for this tea, so I steeped it for just under that amount of time. After the teabags have been steeped, they look even more beautiful. The leaves unfold nicely, just like high quality loose leaf, and I hate to throw them away. However, I tossed the teabag into the bin and waited for the tea to cool. Of course, I took a whiff of the brewed tea, and found it to be slightly richer smelling than other Earl Grays I’ve tried. The bergamot was about the same, but this seems to have a more robust black tea than others, but that might be due to its organic nature.

Cat’s – and other animals – have something called a “Jacobson’s Organ” in the roof of their mouths that allows them to “taste” an odor. I feel I get the same sensation when drinking Earl Gray, because the bergamot seems more like an odor than a taste; like I smell it as I drink it. In this case, the bergamot was clear without being overpowering. Mighty Leaf’s Organic Earl Gray is one of the best I have had and the first one I could probably drink on a regular basis. It starts with a strong black tea flavor, followed by the presence of bergamot. The bergamot continues to linger in the aftertaste and there is almost no bitterness at all.
