Opening the pouch and pulling out the teabag was a disappointment for me with this tea. There wasn’t anything particularly bad about it, but after brewing only loose leaf teas for a while, I find teabags – with the exception of those from Mighty Leaf – to generally be a disappointment. The ones from China Mist seem to be on the cheap side and the appearance of the leaves is not that of high quality. However, once I completed steeping, the leaves – grindings – had expanded nicely and resembled better quality than the first look, more like those from Tazo.
Ceylon Vanilla is “[a]n exotic blend of Bourbon Vanilla and elegant Ceylon teas” according to the package. This was my first sampling of a hot tea from China Mist, although I had tried their mediocre Passion Fruit Iced Tea. After steeping in near boiling water for about two minutes, Ceylon Vanilla had a very nice aroma. The vanilla is noticeable and accents the rich Ceylon bouquet quite nicely. My first disappointment subsided and I was looking forward to trying this cup once is cooled down. Actually, my boss had tried it a few days earlier and become an instant fan.
Well, first impressions aside, this is a nice tea. I have to admit I had not tried a vanilla tea before – although Mighty Leaf’s Vanilla Bean will be in my next order – but vanilla seems to be a natural complement to black tea. This is not a fruity or sweet herbal tea; it is a heavy black tea with a vanilla accent. The heavy Ceylon tea flavor greets you first, followed by a hint of vanilla, then a fairly clean aftertaste that is only slightly astringent. However, it left me wanting a little more. Ceylon Vanilla is a decent cup for your morning tea or with a meal. I was very impressed, and it just goes to show that you can’t judge a tea by the bag. However, I am interested in seeing how it stacks up against other brands.
