This tea is aptly named after the warrior Queen of Babylon, Semiramis, whose history is controversial, contradictory, and at the very least, fascinating. I don’t think this tea is for me, but that makes me feel like the deficient one. Perhaps I’m not mature enough or exciting enough to fully appreciate the quirks. For example, I would never have thought that putting carrots and cherries together in a tea would work at all, but it’s intriguing in this white tea with pomegranate, sour cherries, sweet carrots, apple and pineapple. I normally hate cherry flavored anything because it reminds me too much of cough and flu medication but here, especially mixed with the pineapple and apple, they manage to highlight the sourness of the cherry and avoid slipping into medicinal. At first sip, there’s something vaguely familiar and pleasant that I can’t put my finger on, but it makes me suddenly crave a spice cake. I’m glad they used a white tea as the base since anything else would be sensory overload. I can smell the apples and the cherry and carrot flavors are easily identifiable, which amazes me. There’s something juicy and sweet about the aroma that contrasts with the sour taste. Unfortunately the aftertaste leans more toward sour and bitter, rather than tart. There’s a long lasting sharpness that seems to come from the sour cherries which is fun and tasty at first, then it gets more and more bitter until I have to stop and hope it goes away or have something sweet to counterbalance it.
Teavana calls this “whimsical”; I agree. This is definitely an acquired taste; I imagine the strangest, most wonderful person in a family drinking this. Not the one who looks like they’re inspired by Hee Haw, but the one who veers between totally incomprehensible and hilariously funny.
