I’m not a huge fan of cooked pu’er, and usually find the individual sized tuocha to be flavorless and boring. They are great, however, for travel purposes. They come wrapped in paper, and I often take along a few tuocha with some do-it-yourself tea bags (like those at coffeehouses serving loose leaf tea to go).
I think these are Size 2 tuocha, which is about 4.5 grams. These were strange in that the tuocha itself was slightly pointed at the ‘pole’ and flared on the median, like an acorn. Usually they’re just hemispheres. Using boiling water, I tried two things: with one tuocha, I brewed for a minute at a time, rebrewing 5 times. It was pretty boring. With the other tuocha, I just covered the cup and set it aside to brew for almost eight minutes. This was much better. The scent of rose really comes through, but I was put off by the taste. The earthy pu’er taste was masked by the rose. It didn’t taste like rose per se, but made the liquor taste completely different - dry and tangy in a way.
I can’t say that I’d buy this myself, but it’s not bad. If you’re looking for convenient travel tea or simply enjoy the flavor of rose, maybe this is for you. At Mighty Leaf’s website, a quarter pound costs $17.95, which roughly translates to $0.75 per tuocha. The only other size 2 tuocha I have cost more like $0.25 and are of similar quality.
