Review: Lupicia Fukamushi Sencha Matsuri

According to Lupicia’s website, Fukamushi Sencha Matsuri is steamed three times longer than regular Japanese Sencha tea to produce a “distinct, mellow, full-bodied taste”. The tea comes in a high-quality silken sachet, which I steeped for three minutes in 180 degree water. While the tea was steeping, the aroma of a very strong, grassy green tea permeated my entire kitchen, making me concerned that this tea was going to be a little too robust for me. However, the flavor of the tea is just as Lupicia describes…mellow, yet full-bodied. This is a really smooth green tea characterized by a rich buttery taste and an ever-so-subtle sweetness. Importantly, even though the aroma was quite vegetal, this tea manages to avoid the stringent grassy flavor that sometimes comes through in sencha. This tea was so satisfying that I immediately “double-dipped” my sachet to make a second cup, which was just a bit weaker than the first (as can be expected), but still superior to other senchas that I have had. I would highly recommend this tea to green tea lovers, but also to those trying to acquire the taste for green tea. Lupicia recommends that this blend is great for iced tea. Unfortunately for me, I only had one sachet to sample, so I was unable to evaluate this tea as an iced tea, but based on the smooth flavor, I can imagine that this blend would make a refreshing iced tea.
