"A rich and nutty-tasting formosa oolong... the flavor is kicked up just a bit, giving it more heartiness than what one normally experiences when drinking oolong."

I was both intrigued and hesitant about this tea, as I had always read that tea leaves do have a shelf-life and typically should be used within one year. While many wines are considered to become finer with age, I did not think this was the case with tea. So naturally, I was just a tad skeptical about drinking tea that is as old as I am.
Luckily, Tea Avenue’s 1979 Collectors Oolong quelled any of my doubts. This is a rich and nutty-tasting formosa oolong whose flavor is kicked up just a bit to give just a little more heartiness than what one normally experiences when drinking oolong. Thankfully, the smokiness comes out much more in the aroma than the flavor, where it is most evident primarily as an aftertaste. The smoky element is much subdued compared to the overpowering smokiness offered in Lapsang Souchongs. As with the previous Teaview reviewer comments, I did not particulalry observe a “chewy” texture to this tea (as described by the manufacturer). Although the increased richness of the tea does slightly increase the “mouthfeel”, I would not go so far as to say that the tea was chewable. In all, this was a really enjoyable cup of rich, smoooth oolong. My first experience with a tea that is as old as I am was overwhelmingly positive. If anything, drinking this tea has proven to me that some teas do age well. I would consider purchasing this tea, although I definitely do not see this as an everyday staple.
