I travel out to San Francisco usually once or twice a year for business, and on my last trip I was lucky enough to stay with friends who had a brand new copy of Jennifer Sauer’s book, “The Way to Tea” on their coffee-table. We thumbed through it one night and decided we’d tour some of the tea-houses profiled in this book. It turned out to be an absolute god-send - we hit three places over that week, each of them recommended by Sauer’s book, and we loved them all.
Here I am five months later planning my next trip to San Francisco, and already I’m thumbing through my own copy of “The Way to Tea” to see which tea-houses I’ll be hitting this time! So I figured now was as good a time as any to review this wonderful book on Teaviews.com.
For starters, this is a fine-looking book. Its in coffee-table format, a bit wider than it is tall, so there’s plenty of room on each page for big, detailed photographs of the tea houses, products and merchants profiled within. In my experience its rare to find a truly “readable” coffee-table book - usually the emphasis is more on style than substance - but this is a rare exception. Each little tea-shop profile is written with vibrant descriptions of (and real insight into) the local tea culture, with interesting little vignettes about the owners and operators and their own stories of how they became involved in the tea business.
If you’re a tea lover and you ever plan to visit San Francisco, even if you’ll only go once and never return, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this beautiful book. Its less than fifteen bucks on Amazon right now and its worth every penny.
