dens-sencha.jpgThis is green tea. That was the thought when I opened the bag. It is not green tea with…. It has the strong, unmistakable aroma of green tea. A very earthy aroma – almost like broccoli – natural, as if it had just been cut. I wasn’t sure that I would like it, but I knew that it was fresh and natural.

Den’s Tea – at least in this case – is imported tea from Shirakata-Denshiro Shoten, Inc. in Japan. (Den’s Tea is apparently owned by them) This was my first experience with Sencha. In fact, it was my first experience with Japanese teas. The brewed tea continued the ‘green vegetable’ aroma I had detected from the leaves. After steeping for just over two minutes, I read on the website that I should steep for one. Oh well, I like a strong tea.

What really stands out about this tea is that it really doesn’t stand out as much as I would have thought. Having never tried Japanese green tea, I was expecting something wholly different. Maybe that is because of what I have heard of Matcha. However, this Sencha seems to be somewhat similar to other green teas. It is distinguishable, as the ‘green vegetable’ aroma is mirrored in the taste. But it is not overpowering at all, and – considering that I am not a person who enjoys green vegetables – actually makes the tea quite pleasant. For those who drink green tea for health and/or organic benefits, Den’s Tea Sencha is sure to satisfy. However, it is subtle enough for the rest of us too.
