Not Great"I wouldn't say that this tea is downright horrible, it's just that it's way too spicy for me. I couldn't even finish my cup."

yogi-mexican-chili.jpgMy first reaction to Yogi Tea’s Mexican Sweet Chili was a big, hearty, full-force…sneeze. The spices in this teabag were so strong that just sweeping the teabag by my nose induced an uncontrollable sneezing fit (I am guessing that it was probably the cayenne and black pepper which did it). Thinking I knew what I was in for, I steeped a bag for about 4 minutes and took my first sip. Whoa, there is no joking about the spice level in this brew. This may be the perfect tea for those that love spices, but for me, generally if the tea burns one’s throat and causes one’s face to flush, then the tea isn’t really enjoyable. This tea had promise, offering a really creative and atypical blend of ingredients, which although too numerous to list, included cocoa, orange, ginger, fennel, anise, cayenne, and black pepper. However, with so many ingredients, many distinct flavors just got lost in the mix. I think this tea could have done well without the anise, which dominated the blend. I was hoping to get more of the citrus and chocolate notes, but really couldn’t taste much beyond the anise. As for the aftertaste, the cayenne and black peppers definitely resulted in a burning sensation in the back of the throat, which I can only describe as off-putting and unusual for a tea. Yogi tea suggested using 2 teabags for those that prefer stronger flavor. After barely being able to swallow the tea brewed from a single teabag, I really can’t understand who would be daring (aka crazy) enough to double up on the teabags. Yogi Tea suggested adding a favorite creamer to this tea, so I added some soy milk in the vain hope that the milk would mellow out the aftertaste. Even with the milk, the tea was almost painful to swallow. This is one of the few teas that I actually dumped down the sink because I just could not finish the whole cup I wouldn’t say that this tea is downright horrible, it’s just that it’s way too spicy for me.

Can no one resist the overwhelming urge to sniff the bag. The cops could use this stuff in place of mace. Imagine being hit in the face with just a single bag of the stuff…

I actually LOVED LOVED LOVED it……I hurried up on the internet to find more. I didn’t find it to be too spicey at all….although I do enjoy spicey foods. The smell when I opened the teabag did give me a jolt….but the taste was wonderful. I can’t wait for my box to arrive in the mail.
