I love a good flavored Oolong. Every so often I’ll find a unique oolong blend, but I’ve noticed that usually it’s the same blends with every tea company for oolong tea. Whenever I find one I haven’t tried, I have to sample it. Also being a dessert tea lover, I was really excited to try this blend.
The caramel sugar oolong is the first tea I’ve tried from Golden Moon, and my feelings are mixed. The oolong tea they use in this blend is really pleasant. It’s flavorful and slightly malty, reminiscent of a mild black tea.
The name “caramel sugar” suggests big flavor (at least to me), and this is where the disappointment comes in. Caramel is there, but it’s just barely detectable. The blend isn’t sweet at all on it’s own, either. I will say the small amount of flavor that is there goes really well with the oolong used in this blend, and even with the absence of flavor, this still makes a decent cup.
If this wasn’t a flavored blend, I’d give the tea alone a 7.5. It loses points for such little flavor, but is otherwise worth trying if you enjoy oolong tea (even if you don’t like flavored blends).
