"Mellow, delicate, crisp and refreshing... this tastes more like a Chinese green than a Japanese. I enjoyed it."

Looks can be deceiving, and Adagio’s Green Anji is a good example. At face value, the dry leaves were very dark and wiry, making me think that perhaps this green tea would brew to a dark and bitter cup. However, once the tea was steeped, the black wiry leaves unfurled into somewhat larger and lighter leaves, producing a clear greenish-yellowish liquid with a rather delicate taste. I was quite impressed with the lightness of this tea, given the appearance of the dark leaves. The resulting liquid is crisp and refreshing, tasting like many dragonwell teas I have previously sampled. The flavor composition of this tea is definitely that of a Chinese green tea, not of a Japanese green tea. The tea bears an ever-so-slight nuttiness, although the springy vegetal taste is the primary flavor that comes through. The flavor as a whole, though, is pretty delicate (which can be viewed as an asset for those who do not enjoy an overly grassy-tasting green tea). I can’t say that this tea was superb, but as far as basic and affordable green teas go, this is a pretty decent offering. If you are looking for a knock-your-socks-off tea experience, Adagio Green Anji shouldn’t be your tea of choice. But if you just want a mellow and delicate green tea, then give this one a try.
