Let me start by saying how excited I was to try this tea. The name alone just sounds so delicious. The tea smells wonderfully sweet and hits you with that typical oolong smell and a nice layer of sugary goodness. If I had to guess, I would say that this is a Formosa oolong, as it has a natural sweet nuttiness that I have noticed in other Formosans. The sugar and caramel flavors were noticeable (although not in-your-face powerful), and offered a balanced level of sweetness to the tea. However, while they provided a pleasant, subtle addition to the base flavor, the sugar and caramel seemed to result in a bit of an acrid aftertaste. After a while, the novelty of the sugar caramel flavoring wore off and all I could notice was the less-than-desireable acidic taste left in my mouth. I must admit that I have never tried a single flavored oolong tea that has really impressed me. While I am usually a huge fan of flavored teas, I have found that for me, oolong is a tea that needs no additional flavor enhancements and is best served au natural. In fact, most flavored oolongs have made me shudder and/or gag, then pronounce the rest of the cup as undrinkable (although, fortunately, this was not the case with Golden Moon Sugar Caramel Oolong) . While I didn’t fall in love with this tea, it was still drinkable. Golden Moon’s Sugar Caramel Oolong is probably among the better flavored oolongs I have sampled to date. However, when it comes to oolong, I would still choose any unflavored oolong over this flavored blend.
