I don’t really know why, but iced tea has always been in my eyes almost completely unrelated to what I know tea as and when I see an item marketed specifically for the purpose of making iced tea, I have to admit that I’m always a little weary.
Mighty Leaf offers a variety of iced teas that prepare 1 gallon of tea for every 1 ounce teabag. I had the chance to try their Calypso Mango which is made up of “Black tea, mango, and natural flavor” according to their website. Brewing these is pretty straight forward. Just place one of the giant-sized teabags in the bottom of a gallon pitcher, pour enough boiling water in to fill the container halfway, steep for 3-5 minutes, and than fill the rest of the pitcher with ice and refrigerate.
Once the tea was good and chilled I poured myself a nice tall glass of it. It definitely looks like a black and the scent of mango is there. The taste of this tea is nothing spectacular but not necessarily something that I wouldn’t drink either. You will most likely need to add quite a bit of sugar or some other form of sweetener to make it perfect. Perhaps even some orange slices as well would be nice. The mango flavor is well pronounced but leaves a dry and almost bitter taste in the mouth without adding something sweet to round it out.
I would eventually like to try some of the other flavored iced tea bags to see if they have better ones. The Calypso Mango is a pretty decent tea once you fix it up a bit but that’s usually what iced tea tends to be anyway. It would be an easy and convenient base for making iced tea though. At about $15 you get ten 1-ounce teabags in a metal tin yielding you a whole 10 gallons of iced tea, which comes out to less than 10 cents per cup. Something to think about with summer, and the hot weather, steadily approaching.
