rishi-bao-zhong.jpgThe first thing I notice is the wafting aroma of flowers, but they are so elusive that when I get closer to the pot and try to find the scent again, it's morphed into a slightly vegetal, spring like aroma. The floral scent is so delicate, lovely, and fleeting, it sets a contemplative, romantic mood right away. The lightly curled long leaves unfurl into a curly mass in the pot, adding a lightheartedness that I wasn't expecting. This Taiwanese oolong is the least oxidized of that country's oolongs and tastes similar to a white tea to me due to its soft bordering on creamy taste. This is so amazingly delicate, I feel mannish and gawky in comparison. When I was in the Midwest, I saw a male freshman going on (I'm guessing) a first date. He looked like the boy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory who had to be stretched out on a taffy pull...a young face on the longest body. He was freshly shaven with a sheen of aftershave on his cheeks, dressed in new jeans and a button-down shirt, with an enormous cowboy hat, equally huge bolero tie, belt buckle, and pointy boots that he would need a few more years of puberty to fill. He had a bouquet of flowers and kept fidgeting and taking deep breaths. I wanted to send a chaperone along with him, to punch anyone who didn't find his gawky efforts sweet and loveable...he is the anti-Bao Zhong. Or maybe the very young counterpart to this grand dame of delicacy. The body here is light, with very little to no bite. The soft creaminess and clean taste are distinctive; this makes it clear why oolongs are so revered. This is a good choice for someone who would like to try the less oxidized, lighter side of oolongs though not for people who prefer a more tangible body.
