Numi’s Teaview Snapshot
"Certainly not an oolong as you might expect, this tasted rather more like a complex gyokuro. I loved it."

I've never tried a Pouchong before, and at first the little nubs of dried tea look like a cross between gunpowder and oolong bits. While steeping the distinctiveness of this tea becomes more obvious; at first the scent is like a fragrant white wine with a bit of floral until the scent scope moves down the flower to focus slightly on the greenness. In the pot the aroma of flowers and leaves are apparent yet very subtle. There's something similar to Gyokuro here. It's as though someone took the vegetal flavors down a number of notches, and added something more delicate and fragrant. I wouldn't call this a flavored oolong tea though since it wouldn't adequately address the smoothness and natural transitions between the various tastes. It would be like comparing an amateur's mix of essential oils as a fragrance to one of Caron's urn fragrances...both good but completely and utterly different. I let this steep for two and a half minutes, and that seemed like a good amount of time. There is a very slight dryness that feels appropriate. The body and aroma were well balanced and light. I wouldn't give this to someone who admitted they hated vegetal flavors, but if someone were willing to see how intriguing more naturally complex teas can be, they will be pleasantly surprised. This is a memorable, delicate tea and a good choice for those who are inclined and have the time to sit down and appreciate this.
