I got this out of the library the other day and it’s already on my wishlist for my next book-buying jaunt. This is a reference, history, and beautiful picture book combined. I loved learning about the cultural trajectory of tea and its various uses. The discussions of the camellia sinensis plant variations and production processes went over my head with its thoroughness but I can see it being very useful when taken in smaller doses. I especially appreciated the periodic graytoned sidebars with profiles of specific events, towns, or people that personalized the chapter’s subject. There are charts on the grades of various teas, for example Orthodox Indian tea, Ceylon, CTC, etc.. There is a large chapter on the culture and customs of tea, as well as other chapters on the health benefits, cooking with tea (with recipes), and a glossary of terms usually used to describe tea. My favorite use of this book so far is the encyclopedia and being able to research specific teas via its index. This is an impressive comprehensive resource written and presented in an accessible, user-friendly way. This is a must-purchase for tea fans. Kudos to the Heiss’s for doing such a great job and to Ten Speed Press for recognizing the need for this kind of book.
