You know that candy dish that sits by the cashier’s desk at Indian restaurants? The one full of anise, fennel, licorice and other things that are meant to be eaten as an after dinner mint (at least I think so)? This is the tea version of that. Exactly. I think Indian After Dinner Mint might have been a more apt title. From the current title I thought this would be a sweet similar to chocolate, but it’s much more licorice and anise. The first ingredient in this herbal mix is organic licorice root so be forewarned: unless you love licorice, this is not for you. While the licorice is definitely there, it’s not overpowering since it’s balanced by the recognizable bits of anise, clove, cardamom, and fennel that meld with the chili to make this an intriguing tea. I like how the chili bite is apparent and provides a lip-smacking aftertaste. The problem with these flavors for me is that sometimes it ruins all the deliciousness of the meal I just ate. I can appreciate the accents they provide; it’s all very well done here but it’s just not for me. This would be great for people who can’t get enough of the stuff in that candy dish.
