A lot of people, especially people who have seen pictures of tea plantations, don’t realize that the tea bushes they see are actually trees. In order to keep them bush size they are constantly trimmed of any new growth.
Ancient Emerald Lilly is actually made from old growth tea trees which gives this green tea a much stronger, more mature flavor. When you smell the dry leaves the strong floral notes might make you think that there is something added to the tea. But this is one hundred percent green tea. The tea was very smooth to drink with a long finish and a satisfying mouth feel. It was more reminiscent of a black tea as opposed to green, but it still had the low astringency that you expect from green tea. The flavor of roasted pine nuts in the background made me want Italian food after drinking this tea. Maybe the next time I make pesto I will try this tea with it. I tried drinking it iced but the grassy flavor that you sometimes get with green tea came on very strong making this a bad choice for iced tea.
The Rishi tea website talks about the higher concentration of polyphenols in the tea. Talking about the health benefits is a sure way of getting me to try a tea and I’m glad I tried this one.
