First off, the aroma of this tea is absolutely amazing! Of course, with caramel being one of my all time favorite flavors, I was certainly looking forward to trying Tea Guys Green Caramel. According to their website, this tea includes organic green tea, organic rooibos, cocoa beans, caramel, toasted rice and marigold petals. Of these ingredients, I have to say that the toasted rice seemed the most intriguing. When I first noticed a piece of it in the leaves, my first thought was that it had gotten there accidentally. I actually had to read the ingredient list in order to realize it was supposed to be there. The only previous experience I have had with toasted rice in tea has been in genmaicha and this appeared to be a totally different tea drinking experience.
This tea manages to have a delightful rich and creamy texture without the addition of any dairy products. Vegetal green tea enthusiasts might be somewhat disappointed with this blend, as the sweet mixture of rooibos and caramel are the main attraction. While sipping, I knew that the taste reminded me of something and I finally figured out what it was, caramel corn…perhaps that was part of the intent when the toasted rice was added to the blend. This made for a very enjoyable afternoon cup and is labeled as low caffeine, so I would imagine it would made a very nice evening tea as well.
