After Dark is an interesting mix of an herbal tea and a fruit melange, consisting of chamomile, blood orange, cranberry, apple, cherry and hibiscus flowers. Each item on the ingredients list is obviously present in the blend. It's important to make sure that you mix up the dried blend before scooping out the sample to be infused so that all of the variously sized ingredients get fair representation in the infusion. The blend, according to the website, has a calming function, which is not too hard to believe since the ingredients are all caffeine free. The tea has a wonderfully sweet and fruity aroma to it, and I think it is the cherries that comes through strongest in the scent. When brewed, the tea is a dark purplish-brownish color, perhaps not the most attractive hue, but perfectly acceptable given the ingredients blended together here. I am usually not a huge fan of fruit melanges or tisanes, but I have to say that this one pretty much won me over. The flavor is primarily tart (from the blood orange, cranberry and cherries), but not mouth-puckeringly so because the chamomile and apple add a nicely balanced sweetness to smooth it all out. Tavalon recommends adding a touch of rock sugar to the brew, but I found myself enjoying this tea on its own. Just out of curiousity, though, I added a bit of sugar to my brew and found that I actually preferred the blend's natural sweetness on its own. I definitely plan on purchasing some of this blend on my own to have on hand as a caffeine-free bedtime treat.
