tea_cinnamon-orange-spice-rooibos.jpgWhile I have previously tried and enjoyed chocolate-orange black teas, The Necessiteas Chocolate Orange is the first blend that I have sampled which adds chocolate and orange flavors to a rooibos base. I must admit that when I requested this sample, I was expecting a black tea, but I was not disappointed once I realized it was rooibos since rooibos pairs well with citrus and sweet flavors. This tea smells wonderfully, and is much heavier on the citrus than the chocolate. If I really tried, I could pick up faint chocolate notes in the aroma. Large pieces of orange rind are very noticeable in the blend; less common were pieces of chocolate. When brewed, the orange really is the major player. The orange flavor is sweet and natural, and very similar to other orange rooibos teas (such as from Specialteas) that I have previously had. I was very disappointed to find that the chocolate flavor was very weak. As a self-admitted chocoholic, I was really hoping to experience the chocolate flavor a bit more. Reflecting on the proportion of orange rinds to chocolate chunks in the blend, however, I guess it is not too surprising that the chocolate flavor was just about masked by the orange. This tea was still pretty tasty, and certainly enjoyable as an orange rooibos tea. In my opinion, it requires nothing to be added to the brew. However, this tea loses points because the chocolate flavor just wasn't as strong as I thought it could be for a tea named "chocolate orange".
