Revolution is a tea vendor new to me. From my initial experience, I can see that they offer high-quality tea in silken infuser tea bags, with each individual tea bag containined in its own paper box packaging. The individual wrapping can either be viewed as unneccesary use of packaging, or else a clever way to make individual bags more portable. Regardless, the first Revolution product that I sampled, and the subject of today's review, is their White Tangerine Tea. The silken tea bag allowed me to easily see that the tea leaves contained inside were, for the most part, of fairly large size, although the pieces on the bottom did tend more towards smaller particles. There were also some pieces of orange peel in the bag, and, as indicated on the ingredients list, invisible tangerine flavoring. While steeping the tea, I noticed a strong flowery scent very reminiscent of a first flush Darjeeling. In fact, had I just blindly smelled this tea, I would have bet money that this tea was a Darjeeling. The citrus scent was very, very faint, almost undetectable. The flavor of this tea is like no other white tea I have sampled before. There is nothing mild, bland, or subtle about this brew. On the contrary, this is a very in-your-face white tea. As with the scent, the flavor of tangerine is minor. I really had to focus to try to taste tangerine. Even with what I considered a lack of tangerine, the tea still has some pretty pungent flavor. As weird as this may sound, this tea had a bitter (but pleasant) taste to it, perhaps most comparable to that hoppy biting aftertaste that accompanies many India Pale Ale beers. The bitterness could not be (I assume) from my over-steeping it, as I brewed the tea in below-boiling water for less than three minutes. Rather, I think that the bitter bite is an inherent characteristic of the tea; again, it really should be noted that this is not an unpleasant bitterness, just a different level of flavor than one might expect from a white tea. Overall, I rank this tea a 6 out of 10 because even though it has an unusual and unique flavor, it falls short on delivering a stronger tangerine punch. I would, however, still recommend this tea to those that love hoppy beers, because the flavors seem very comparable. At less than 40 cents a tea bag, one can't go wrong giving this blend a try.
