"The presentation on this tea is awesome. After steeping, it resembles a freshly picked peony blossom. The color is a rich copper. The aroma has the sweetness of a muscatel grape and the palate is full with flavors of almonds and honey. The finish is long and smooth. Taste and presentation. Its all there."--Drink the Leaf website.

I'm not sure that I would categorize this as a true blooming tea--it appears mostly to be black leaves twisted and woven around a circular string. It looks flower-like even in the package. The aroma coming from my sample package does have a sweetness to it that is somewhat reminiscent of muscatel grape or more accurately honey to my nose. I steeped some of this up just in my tea-maker--not in a pot. It is a 24 ounce maker so there was plenty of room for the peony to open up and stretch it's leaves appropriately. I don't have a glass teapot, but I would have concerned about bitterness if left in a pot anyway. It did open up and become flower-like in appearance. However, if you are looking for a true blooming tea, this pales in comparison to those. That said, it is much lovelier than the normal ugly black grounds that get left in the bottom of my tea maker (bonus--easy clean-up).

The tea itself does have a pleasant sweetness to it and a medium body with no astringency and little bitterness to speak of. This is a tea for the masses--everyone should enjoy it reasonably well. It is not a strong acquired taste such as an assam or Irish breakfast tea. I do taste a nuttiness and a honey sweetness. The leaves easily dropped a second infusion and I suspect they would have easily given a third and possibly a fourth.

This is not the type of thing that I would keep around for everyday. I would probably consider this more of a special occasion offering. It does deliver nice presentation that your guests will enjoy and a cup of tea that can be enjoyed by everyone. Drink The Leaf seems to carry a lot of quality tea and the Red Peony is worthy of your consideration.
