One thing that disappoints me the most about some teas is that the smell of the unbrewed (and sometimes even the brewed) tea is so wonderful and strong and delicious, but the actual flavor of the tea pales in comparison. So, of course, when I opened up my sample packet of SpecialTeas Spring Thunder and took a good whiff of the wonderful coconut-lime aroma, I was thrilled and a little wary; what if the actual tea didn't have the same amount of flavor the smell promises?Thankfully, all my worrying was for naught. After a quick 1 minute steep (it is a green tea, after all), a most delicious and flavorful tea was ready. The flavor is, probably for the better, not nearly as strong as the scent of the unbrewed tea, but it does not taste "watered down" by any means. The description says it contains "green tea, coconut, lime, and sunflower petals". The sunflower petals, and even the green tea, are hardly noticeable, while the coconut and lime run the show. Unbrewed, the leaves smell distinctly of coconut and lime. Both flavors are easily distinguished, though it's just as easy (and equally delicious) to let them blend together. In the actual brew, the lime pulls back just a bit, but it still has detectable lime notes that work perfectly with the coconut.
This tea is just as wonderful iced. The coconut comes out bit more in the iced brew, giving it a very smooth mouth-feel; perfect on a hot summer afternoon. While both brews are amazing as-is, a pinch or two of sweetener in the iced version really hits the spot. (The hot version, on the other hand, works better with no sweetener at all.)
Bottom Line: Unless you absolutely hate coconut, you must try this blend! The flavor is plenty strong enough to hold it's own without any sweetener, though it's not overpowering. All of SpecialTeas 1/2oz samplers are $1, and you can get a free one for spending enough (I'm not sure of the exact amount, but I only spent $16 and I still snagged a free sample). SpecialTeas claims the samples make three to five 6oz cups, but with my sample I was able to brew a whopping NINE 8oz cups!
Without a doubt, this is an awesome deal for $1!
